Manchester United have been credited with an interest in Southampton right-back Kyle Walker-Peters recently, and the former Tottenham Hotspur man could be a superb addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad.
What’s the word?
According to The Athletic, both United and Arsenal have the full-back on their lists of potential targets this summer as Ten Hag looks to improve on his current defensive options at Old Trafford.
It’s said that Spurs could also move for him as they possess a £30m buy-back clause.
Last season saw Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot compete for the starting spot at right-back, with both players flattering to deceive, so the Saints defender could offer a more consistent option for United’s new manager next season.
Ten Hag would love him
Walker-Peters has been a near ever-present in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side since he swapped Spurs for St Mary’s in 2020.
The 25-year-old has made 82 appearances in total, contributing two goals and seven assists, after struggling to nail down a starting spot in north London.
Last season saw the Southampton right-back make 32 appearances in the top flight, contributing one goal and two assists, with WhoScored awarding him a solid average rating of 6.83 for his performances.
Would Walker-Peters be a good signing?
His displays were enough to earn him a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad, and his versatility could be vital for United next season, as the arrival of Tino Livramento saw him regularly feature as a left-back in Hasenhuttl’s side.
Versatility is something that any manager would appreciate, and given that Luke Shaw and Alex Telles were also questioned at times last season, Walker-Peters would give Ten Hag a reliable option on either flank.
Paul Merson was full of praise for the Englishman after his international debut earlier this year, saying: “The lad has been let go by Tottenham really. Then, he goes there and, for me, he has been absolutely outstanding. He thoroughly deserves his debut for England. A good player.”
Given United’s problems at the back last season, Ten Hag is clearly looking for defensive reinforcements this summer.
Considering Walker-Peters’ impressive form at Southampton in recent years, the 52-year-old would surely love to have the England defender at Old Trafford.
