Nottingham Forest have been in negotiations to sign Lewis O’Brien this summer, and a reliable source has now given an update on the club’s pursuit of the player.
What’s the latest?
According to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth, Steve Cooper’s side are close to sealing a deal for the Huddersfield Town midfielder.
Sheth tweeted on Friday afternoon: “Nottingham Forest in advanced talks with Huddersfield Town over the signing of midfielder Lewis O’Brien. Fee under discussion thought to be in region of £10m. Growing belief Forest can complete signing in next 48 hours.”
It’s a big coup
If Forest can complete the move for O’Brien, it would be their eighth signing of the summer, which shows that the club is wasting no time or resources in building Cooper a squad which can withstand the highly competitive nature of the Premier League.
The Huddersfield star has been a standout performer in the Championship following his contributions to the team which saw them narrowly miss out on promotion back into the top-flight after losing to Forest in the play-off final at Wembley.
Over 43 league appearances, the 23-year-old scored three goals, delivered three assists and created four big chances, making one key pass and 2.2 tackles per game, along with winning the majority of his duels (56%) and completing the vast majority of his dribble attempts (70%).
His output in the centre of the pitch proves that he is more than capable of offering a diverse skill set where he can contribute to the attacking threat in the team and also be relied upon to confidently commit to challenges, win the ball and cause problems for opponents’ build-up play.
Terriers team-mate Jonathan Hogg has lavished praise on O’Brien for his performances in the team and even dubbed the player “sensational”, saying: “I think it’s only a matter of time before he plays in the Premier League.”
“He has a lot of great attributes, his energy and intensity is sensational, up there with the best I’ve seen in my career.”
Would Lewis O’Brien be a good signing?
With that in mind, the signing of O’Brien would be a big coup for Forest this summer; and if Cooper can get the best out of him in the Premier League, the 23-year-old could make a massive difference to the Reds’ survival chances next season.
