Rangers could be set to receive a transfer windfall in the near future as the transfer race for Calvin Bassey intensifies.
What’s the word?
After a superb season for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, it was perhaps always likely that the Nigerian would be linked with a move away from Ibrox this summer.
The 22-year-old had already excelled at left-back but looked like a transformed player in the centre of defence in the second half of the campaign, particularly impressing in Rangers’ Europa League run.
Journalist Ryan Taylor has now provided the latest update on his potential exit from Ibrox, tweeting: “Rangers keen to encourage an auction for Calvin Bassey. Ajax, who view Nigerian as Lisandro Martínez replacement, currently highest bidders. Brighton have also made an offer. Asking price: £25m but with race hotting up, any sale could surpass that figure.”
Supporters will be buzzing
Considering that the £12.6m received from Nathan Patterson’s move to Everton currently holds the record for Rangers’ most expensive departure, supporters will be delighted to hear that the Light Blues could earn in excess of £25m for Bassey.
While they will no doubt be gutted to lose such an influential player, the 22-year-old was signed for a minimal compensation fee just two years ago, so the Gers will undoubtedly make a huge profit on his sale.
Is Bassey Rangers’ best ever business?
It will also give Rangers the freedom to be more aggressive in the transfer window, which could be vital as they target a spot in the Champions League group stage ahead of their upcoming qualification fixtures.
Sporting director Ross Wilson, and anyone else involved in Bassey’s initial move to Ibrox, can take an enormous amount of credit for spotting his talent, while Steven Gerrard and Van Bronckhorst also played a huge part in his development.
Supporters will be hoping that Ajax and Brighton continue to battle each other for Bassey and drive up his price even further in what will surely be a record transfer fee received for the Gers, which will hopefully be reinvested over the next few weeks.
