Liverpool have been linked with a move for Matheus Nunes this summer, and now a new update has emerged on the club’s progress in their pursuit of the midfielder.
What’s the latest?
According to Portuguese news outlet Correio da Manha, Liverpool are now in competition with Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign Nunes this summer.
As per the report, the 23-year-old star is claimed to be close to a move to the Premier League this summer and the player believes that a decisive offer will be made to secure him a move to England.
Imagine him & Thiago
Liverpool are reported to be in the market to bolster their midfield over the next few transfer windows, with Jude Bellingham a primary target for the Reds. However, the England international will not be available until next summer, so Jurgen Klopp could get ahead in his rebuild with Nunes.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner will all be out of contract in June 2023, as well as Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara now well into their 30s and in the latter stages of their careers.
As a result, after rebuilding the forward line this year with the signings of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho, FSG must identify players that can slot in seamlessly to ensure Liverpool remain at the top of their game to compete for the biggest trophies in football.
Nunes – who was hailed “one of the best” by Pep Guardiola – is recognised for his ball control in the centre of the pitch, and had a fantastic season for Sporting CP in their most recent Liga Portugal campaign – becoming a key player for the club.
Over 33 league appearances, the Portuguese midfielder scored three goals, delivered two assists and created six big chances, as well as made an average of 1.3 tackles, won the majority of his duels (55%) and was successful in completing the vast majority of his dribbles (70%) per game.
Nunes’ ability to be effective in both defensive and attacking play would be a great asset to Klopp next season in the centre of the pitch and the German coach could form a formidable pressing partnership between Thiago and the £42.5m star next season.
Combining Thiago’s playmaking abilities with Nunes’ prolific dribbling talent could be a force that would be a nightmare for Liverpool’s opponents to break down.
With that being said, the signing of the talented midfielder would be a major coup for FSG if they can beat their Premier League competitors to Nunes’ signature this summer.
