Why Robert Lewandowski rejected Chelsea for Barcelona

Why Robert Lewandowski opted to join FC Barcelona over Chelsea has been revealed on Sunday.

Lewandowski, 34, has left Bayern Munich after a historic stint at the club that saw him cement his legacy as one of the greatest strikers of all time.

But after dominating the German game and winning the Champions League, Lewa has decided he wanted a new challenge.

As a result, despite his age, Lewandowski received a fair bit of interest this summer but in the end, Barcelona have somewhat bizarrely agreed to sign the striker despite their financial issues and them just getting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on a free in January.

“FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of Robert Lewandowski, dependent on the player passing a medical and contracts being signed,” Barca wrote in a statement on Saturday.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has explained why Lewandowski opted to sign for Barcelona instead of Chelsea or PSG, pointing toward an agreement being in place since February:

“Zahavi and Lewandowski gave their word to Barcelona since the end of February and have never disrespected that pact: three-year contract with the option of another year on top of that,” Romano said.

“Lewandowski rejected Chelsea and PSG, who wanted to try to make a proposal. Lewandowski wanted to have an experience in La Liga, he considers Barcelona an extraordinary club and has received numerous calls from Xavi: all this has made a difference, he would never have considered any other club.”
