The contenders

There are several teams who could have some say in the debate for the best midfield in the Premier League, though in truth there is only really one clear winner.

One of the contenders lower down the list is Tottenham Hotspur. One year ago Spurs’ midfield was filled with players who did not fit their system or suit the Premier League very well.

Now, however, following the signings of Rodrigo Bentancur and, most recently Yves Bissouma, Spurs have a number of quality central midfielders.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Oliver Skipp, when fit, are excellent box-to-box/deep-lying playmaker options, whilst Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Bissouma are both great defensive midfielders who also add something in the attacking third.

Next up is Liverpool. As mentioned above, Fabinho is one of the best defensive midfielders in the world right now. Further forward, Thiago is, for the most part, an excellent creator.

Jordan Henderson’s form has dipped in recent times, but the Englishman is expected to be replaced in the near future by the very promising Harvey Elliott.

Finally, Chelsea continue to boast a very strong midfield selection. Granted, N’Golo Kante has become somewhat injury-prone in his old age, but on his day, there are few that can compete with the Frenchman.

Jorginho is also one of the best passers of the ball in the Premier League, whilst Mateo Kovacic remains somewhat underrated to this day.

And whilst it remains to be seen if Thomas Tuchel uses him this season, Conor Gallagher clearly has a bright future ahead of him following an excellent loan stint with Crystal Palace.

The winner

In truth though, there was only one real winner when it came to the best midfield in the Premier League.

Manchester City have two of the very best defensive midfielders in England right now after they secured the services of Kalvin Phillips as back-up to/ a partner for Rodri.

Further forward, meanwhile, the Sky Blues have two of the greatest, most creative players in the division in the form of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.

And whilst his future remains up in the air this summer, Ilkay Gundogan is an excellent back-up option whose runs from deep are a serious nightmare for opposition defences.
