England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has tested positive for Covid-19 and will be unavailable for the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 quarter final clash with Spain on Wednesday evening.
The FA confirmed that the Aston Villa stopper will be monitored regularly with a view to returning to the squad as soon as possible.
Hampton is the third member of the England squad and playing staff to have tested positive for Covid-19 during the Euros, along with defender Lotte Wubben-Moy and manager Sarina Wiegman.
Ellen White and Alex Greenwood both tested positive in the buildup to the tournament.
Hampton is also the latest player at the tournament to test positive, alongside Jackie Groenen and Vivianne Miedema of the Netherlands, Lea Schüller of Germany, Laura Wienroither and Katharina Naschenweng of Austria, Anna Westerlund, Tuija Hyyrynen and Tinja-Riika Korpela of Finland and Italy’s Valentina Cernoia
Hampton is yet to feature at this summer’s European Championships, with Mary Earps currently England’s first choice goalkeeper, having started all three group fixtures.
The 21-year-old has made two senior appearances for the Lionesses and made her debut against Wednesday’s opponents Spain during February’s Arnold Clark Cup.
Hampton speaks fluent Spanish, and admitted she was able to listen to what the Spanish opposition were saying during her side’s last meeting with La Roja and subsequently inform her teammates of their plans.
England face Spain at Brighton’s Amex Stadium on Wednesday evening in the first quarter final of Euro 2022.
