Lieke Martens has been ruled out of the remainder of Euro 2022 after suffering a foot injury during the Netherlands’ final group game against Switzerland.

The Dutch ran out 4-1 winners over Switzerland to book their place in the quarter-finals as group runners up, with Martens withdrawn with 16 minutes remaining.

The Netherlands national team confirmed that the winger sustained a foot injury and will not be available again at the tournament. She will leave the Dutch training camp on Tuesday, and a replacement cannot be called up in her absence.

“This is terrible news for Lieke and for us,” said Netherlands boss Mark Parsons. “She has fully committed herself to the team during this tournament. It is very unfortunate that her European Championship has to end like this.”

Martens has a proud history at the European Championships, having been named player of the tournament at Euro 2017 as the Netherlands stormed to victory on home soil.

However, she was yet to hit the same heights at Euro 2022, with the Netherlands still moving through the gears during the group stages.

This is the second injury absence Martens has experienced this season, having missed four weeks of action towards the end of the 2021/22 campaign – including both legs of Barcelona’s Champions League semi-final victory over Wolfsburg – with a hamstring injury.

The Dutch international confirmed her departure from Barcelona this summer, and will play her football at PSG next term.

The Netherlands take on France in one of the most fascinating Euro 2022 quarter final match ups at the New York Stadium on Saturday.
