Shakira’s name has been all over the front pages for over a month now, due to her separation from Gerard Pique, with whom she had a 12-year relationship and two children.
Although this must be one of the most difficult moments of her life, the truth is that the Colombian has been through other very sad situations before.
The tragic death of her brother
Shakira experienced a tragic loss with the death of her brother William Mebarak.
Some testimonies indicate that the singer’s brother died when he was only 19 years old in a car accident, causing great pain for Shakira and her family.
And although the singer was only two years old when the tragic event occurred, and she is still survived by eight other siblings, the hole left by William is irreparable.
The song he wrote for her
She composed the song ‘Your Dark Glasses’, in memory of his deceased brother.
“My son died at the age of 19, Shakira was 2 years old”, narrated her father William Mebarak, in the documentary that VH1 aired in 2006 about Shakira.
The man recalls that it was his own daughter who told him about the composition she had made.
“One day, she said to me: ‘Dad, I want you to listen to this song, it’s called ‘Your dark glasses’. From the moment I lost my eldest son, I hid my pain behind a pair of glasses and she made a connection to that,” he explained.
The track was included on “Magia”, Shakira’s first studio album, released on 24 June 1991.
Tonino, her inseparable brother
Tonino Mebarak is Shakira’s manager, and the two have a close relationship.
Before becoming one of Shakira’s closest friends, Tonino made his fortune selling watches, just like his father, and managed to stay well off.
Some media have pointed out that it was Tonino who helped Shakira become aware of Pique’s nightlife and alleged infidelities.
